Mesh Repair & Watertight Healing FAQ

What causes inverted normals and degenerate triangles in CAD files?

When analytical CAD B-Rep surfaces (NURBS curves, filleted cylinders, spheres) are tessellated into planar triangles, numerical rounding or complex boundary curves can produce degenerate zero-area sliver triangles or inverted facet normals where surface winding contradicts the body solid.

Why do 3D printing slicers fail on non-manifold meshes?

Slicers like Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, and Cura calculate planar layer slices using topological ray intersection. If a mesh has inverted normals or open edges, the slicing engine cannot determine which side is solid interior versus empty exterior, leading to missing layers, infill voids, or slicer crashes.

How does the in-browser Auto-Repair engine heal CAD geometry?

StepSTLTools analyzes each facet in memory: it strips zero-area micro-slivers, unifies face winding order, recalculates analytical outward unit normals, and re-serializes the healed mesh into a clean, 100% watertight Binary STL without uploading any files.

Does mesh healing alter my critical engineering dimensions?

No. The auto-repair algorithm only culls collapsed zero-area degenerate triangles and corrects vector orientations; it never shifts, scales, or distorts valid vertex coordinates.
